Princess Madeleine Gives Birth to a Boy, Charlene Attends TV Awards & Order of the Garter

Happy Monday to you all!

We're back with something of a royal roundup, keeping you abreast of the latest news and appearances from our favourite royal families. What better way to begin the week than with royal baby news? It was announced today Princess Madeleine gave birth to a son on 15 June at 1.45 pm. The statement continued: "Both mother and child are in good health".

The baby boy is the couple's second child - they also have a daughter, Princess Leonore, who is sixteen months old. It is expected the children will be brought up in London as the family are due to move to Chris's native Britain later this year. It's been an incredibly exciting time for the Swedish royals with the latest arrival and Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia's wedding on Saturday. Below we see Madeleine, Chris and Leonore arriving for the big day; I actually had no idea Madeleine was so close to her due date when writing about the wedding.

Madeleine looked radiant in a sparkling tiara and jewels and a flowing Elie Saab gown. 'Anne in Texas' kindly mentioned the Embellished Belted Silk Gown is still available in limited sizing for £4,800 at Net-A-Porter. I'm an enormous fan of the designer and enjoyed seeing product shots of the gown; it's very much a 'Princess' gown and worked very well as a maternity piece.

Congratulations to Madeleine and Chris!

Over in Monaco, Princess Charlene has been making a return to her usual schedule of engagements. The Princess was surrounded by stars of television as she opened the 55th Television Fesival in Monte Carlo. Attendess included Dallas star Patrick Duffy and Nashville's Eric Close.

Charlene presented Patricia Arquette with an award.

Charlene sported a softer look than usual; she's been growing her hair a little longer and I think it looks great. Her black asymmetrical dress with sparkling ruby and diamond earrings made for a chic look.

It was a busy day for the British royals. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince William and the Princess Royal joined Prime Minister David Cameron and other dignitaries to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

More on Magna Carta from a Mail Online summary:

'Magna Carta means The Great Charter in Latin and was originally issued in 1215.  It was the first document forced onto a King of England by a group of his subjects, the feudal barons, in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect their privileges.
The charter required King John of England to proclaim certain liberties and accept that his will was not arbitrary. It was an important part of the process that led to the rule of constitutional law in the English speaking world.
In practice Magna Carta in the medieval period did not generally limit the power of kings. But by the time of the English Civil War it had become an important symbol for those who wished to show that the King was bound by the law. It influenced the early settlers in New England and inspired later constitutional documents, including the United States Constitution.'

From there, the royals made their way to Windsor Castle for the Order of the Garter ceremonies (we normally cover this event over at Duchess Kate Blog, but as Kate was not present this year I thought it appropriate to cover it over here).

The Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded in 1348 by Edward III, is the highest order of chivalry existing in England. St George is the patron saint of the ceremony. The Queen appoints the Knights of the Garter without advice from ministers and this year there will be no new knights installed into the order. Interestingly, Prince William was the 1000th Knight on the register when he joined the order in 2008. There can only be 24 members of the order at a given time, so it is a huge honour to be chosen.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Sophie, who has just returned from Sweden where she and Edward represented the Queen at the royal wedding, recycled a vibrant green 1950's style bespoke dress from British brand Suzannah.

Finally, Queen Letizia was stylish today in a dark blue suit and striking pink shirt for the annual Students Residence meeting.

We'll be back with a 'Tiara Time' post next :)

  1. Congratulations to Madeleine and Chris! And could the timing have been any better? Great news. :))

I like the style of Sophie's dress (although green isn't my favorite color) and I do like this hat. A vintage look...

Letizia's haircut is just perfect for her. And Charlene looks different, but I can't put my finger on what it is...I don't think it's the longer hair.

  2. Oh thank you for this post! I hope you always tweet when you write a new post on this blog. I love to read it as well as your Duchess Kate blog. I think Princess Charlene's hair looked great today. I also love Sophie's look at the garter ceremony today. Good look to repeat! So 50's!

I would not normally like the Countess of Wessex's color of dress, but with the accents of black and the bow: I REALLY love it! I

Lovely about the baby - I'm glad he waited to come until after the wedding and Madeleine was a trooper to be there - looking wonderful. The pale pink and the soft material really made a lovely effect. It's not a completely happy analogy - so I won't press it too far, but there is a wonderful description in Shakespeare of a pregnant woman billowing like the sails of a ship as she moved - and the way that gown flowed reminded me of that.

It's been a good royal hair year - Charlene looks lovely with her softer look - it becomes her and I really like Letizia's new cut - and they are both elegantly dressed. Letizia has really plunged into her work - as had Felipe and they seem to be doing an amazing job of restoring the reputation of the Spanish monarchy.

Sophie's outfit is quite amazing, like out of the 1950's. I like it. Camilla's hat looks like a loo seat at a distance - better when I saw a close-up but her coat has nice detailing. Somehow I thought Charles was at the Magna Carta and Camilla wasn't but I see neither was. Wonder why. No Kate but Tim Lawrence in the first row. Odd somehow for such an important event but maybe the focus was supposed to be mainly on the queen, P.M. and archbishop.

    1. LOL. I happen to like her "loo seats". She has a full figure and they suit her. Smaller hats look out of proportion somehow (not that she has worn many).

  6. I am happy for the Swedish Royal Family: so much excitement in that family lately and what a blessing for all. I saw a pic of the new little prince and he looks like "Daddy" at least for the time being. It seems Mom Maddy's angels was hard at work during the wedding festivities-she was on her feet quite a lot which perhaps was a blessing as the little one waited until after it was all over- To God be the Glory!

I am a huge fan of midi dresses and Countess Sophie really "owns them." She wears them ever so well, whether its the high-waist full- skirt- look or the shift dress she just always look stunning in them. Not many other royal women have embraced this look except for Princess Beatrice but these women have and I like them.

I have noticed the change in Charlene since her pregnancy and the subsequent birth of her babies. She seems so happy and at peace. Joy just emanates from her and it seems she is in a place that she has always wanted to be since the birth of her babies. I am happy for the family.

I love how when Camilla wears coat dresses in white or pastel colors. She looks fabulous.
